FAQ - Recording School

* Do I need any recording experience prior to taking the class?

No specific experience is necessary.  If you’re not sure if it’s right for you, please call us. We’ll be glad to answer any questions or concerns you may have and help you figure out if it’s a good fit for you.

* What age group is this class geared toward?

The class is designed for ages 15 and up.  We typically see a wide range of ages.  While students learn a wealth of knowledge from Michael, they end up learning a lot from each other, too.  The adults know things and ask questions the kids would not ask and the kids know many things the adults do not know so everyone benefits.  Plus, it seems to be a very valuable experience for high schoolers to interact with adults on a common goal project.  For these reasons, we have found this age range to be beneficial to everyone in the class.

* Will we learn about ProTools in the class?

Yes!  While this is not specifically a ProTools class or tutorial, we will be working on a ProTools system every class and will utilize many ProTools techniques. You will learn the basics of ProTools ie: how to set up a session, basic routings and techniques for tracking, editing and mixing. Each student will get individual hands-on time with ProTools during the class.

* When do the classes start?

We run classes year around based on studio availability.  Instead of just posting preselected class dates, we've found that it works best to take a poll of students and find dates that will work for everyone.  This is accomplished through our Class Schedule Worksheet which narrows down collective dates that work for all.  The exact class dates are not chosen until we have a minimum of 4 students signed up.  Once we receive completed Class Schedule Worksheets from at least 4 students, we can then see which dates are working for everyone and will then chose the class dates.  With this system, we can work around your schedule and make sure the class dates work for you.  Classes typically meet weeknights beginning at 7pm and ending at approximately 9pm. If you would like to sign up, please fill in the form below and send it to us.  We will then send you the Class Schedule Worksheet and Enrollment Form so you can complete the enrollment process.

* How much does it cost?

The class tuition is $595 total.  To hold your spot in the class, we require a $300 deposit with the remaining $295 balance due 7 days prior to the first class.

* Do I need to bring anything to class?

Just your willingness to learn. We will provide hand outs each week detailing our lesson for that day.

* Do I receive anything at the end of the class?  All students will receive a framable Certificate of Completion and a demo recording of the production we create together.  BONUS: Each student will receive 1-hour of private follow up consultation with Michael.  This can be scheduled anytime within the first 2 months following conclusion of our class.

* How do I sign up?

Fill out the form below and send it to us.  We will then send you the Class Schedule Worksheet and Enrollment Form via email. Once you receive the forms, fill them out and and return to us along with your deposit or payment in-full.  Payment terms/instructions are listed on the Enrollment form.  Students are selected on a first come-first serve basis.  Again, we take a maximum of 6 students per session and figure out the exact class dates once we receive everyone's Class Schedule Worksheet.

Thanks much! We'll get back with you soon with enrollment information.

“I’ve known Michael for over 30 years. He is a true professional as a musician, recording engineer and teacher. Our band has recorded at his studio and we appreciated his knowledge and guidance. My son is a young musician and when Michael offered the Mackinaw Harvest Recording Class, I knew I wanted my son to take it. He learned how to record a song from start to finish with a true professional producer and really enjoyed the experience. I highly recommend the recording class and Michael in general!
